C3 - Green Island

Green Island

By Steven Chang at Aug. 07,2007

Good evening! How are you today?

Tonight! I will prepare C3 speech to share everyone.

My C3 speech topic is Green Island.

I am very like the place. Because it is very beautiful and I could find let's me surprised each time.

So I want to introduce a beautiful island.

Green Island was originally called "Fire-Burned Island"

Why call Fire-Burned Island? Is the island burning? No.

More than a hundred years age, when fishing boats were sailing back to the Island before sundown , the island looked as it was surrendered by flames and burning under the sunset.

Since then, this beautiful island was nicknamed "Fire-burned Island"

After the Taiwanese government regained Taiwanese sovereignty from Japan, the Taiwanese government promoted the program of afforestation on the Fire-burned Island and changed the old name into "Green Island".

The island is located 33 kilometers to the east of Taitung City.

There is an area of 16.2 square kilometers and a population of 3300 on the green island.

The island is formed by volcanic lava.

There are four imposing activities on the Green Island.

The first activity – Conventional Dashi Fishing Rod Experience Camp.

"Dashi Fishing Rod " is a traditional fishing art in the green island ,

Someone also called "one-rod fishing", needs high techniques.

The activity time: from May to August every year

The second activity – Mountain and Sea Exploration Activity Camp

You can get a in-depth understanding of the green island by this activity.

I went to the green island with my girlfriend last year. I picked up a stone of fish shape from seacoast. Let's us surprised and happy.

The activity time: form June to December

The third activity – National Green Island Long Distance Sea Swimming

You can experience sea resource of the island in person, knowing the ecology of coral reefs.

The activity time:15th .August

The fourth activity: Green Island Flying Fishing

The black ocean current brings rich marine resources, so if you are a sea fishing expert , please attend the flying fishing tourism cup held by green island every year.

C4-CRM

CRM

Aug. 07, 2007 By Gina Wu

What is CRM? It is Customer Relationship Management. Generally speaking it means customer service. As a business secretary in a trading department, I believe CRM is an important element in my daily work. I went to a lecture about CRM in Tainan city hall. It's a great lecture for free and I'd like to share with my dear fellows at Toastmaster Shin Ying club here.

You might have experienced these services as I have.

1. (operator): Press 1 for mandarin service, press 2 for Taiwanese service, press 3 for English service, press # (pound) to repeat from the beginning, press 9 to the operator …. Let's press 9 …..Sorry, all operators are busy now, please wait, please wait, please wait…..

Hang Up and call again… busy, please call back in few minutes, thanks for your calling, bye-bye.

2. (call center): Hello, I ordered some books 7 days ago but I haven't received anything, could you check for me? She said "one second, I will pass the line to a person in charge" --- pass to Sam (I repeated my question but he couldn't help) …. Pass to Linda (repeated my question, but she couldn't help either). Well, well, well, Goodness, I repeated my question for many times but no answer.

You might laugh at these kinds of service. Ask yourselves, do you like someone provide you these kinds of service? Not really like it. On the contrary, if your staff treats customers in this way, you might hire a staff to fire your customers, soon the company is closed.

Good service is a vital element to CRM absolutely.

Principle 1: Customer is always right. (What if customer is not right?)

Principle 2: If customer is not right, please refer to principle 1.

Well, customer is not always right or honest, sometimes they are mean and critical (picky), yet customer's need must be satisfied. As long as they are satisfied on our efforts and service, a repeat order is coming soon. "Repeat order" means continuous revenue and the company survives in good name.

How do we start CRM? Please do right things, for example:

1. Set our target right:

When there is a need, there is a customer. Pay attention to what they need, provide what they might need, not what we like to sell.

2. Treat customer right:

Make them comfortable while their visit, bring some local food, soft drink or souvenir to make them like home and we are family. We also have business trips to visit customers once or twice a year to facilitate relationship, a proper gift is necessary to CRM.

3. Listen sincerely:

Listen to our customers sincerely, put their opinion in our service field, in order to provide a better service next time. Most customers won't tell us about their complaint directly, only 10% will. As soon as a complaint happens, solve it efficiently, the sooner the better. You won't ever know how many people have listened to the same complaint from him or her.

4. Treat our staff or colleagues right:

No team-work no service, treat our work team as humans not slaves. This is for customer's good and for our own good too. The work-team is satisfied and then customer is satisfied properly.

Who should do CRM? Hey, it's not a duty only to the clerk, waiter or service center. No matter where we work and what's our position, we must understand "customer" means money ($), customer is our salary source, everyone should do CRM without any hesitation. Take it as our daily duty all the time. Once again, CRM is important to a business and good service is a vital element to CRM.

C4 - Walk for Health

Walk for Health
By Mickey Chuang at Aug. 7, 2007

What is “Walk”? “Walk” is naturally born ability for human being. We know that without doubt. But do you really know what is called”walk”. Is this kind of walks? (Show the catwalk picture) How about this? (Show the Johnnie Walker picture) Yes, these are kinds of walk. Today I am going to introduce you something about “walk”. Let’s Walk for Health.
We have ever heard some leading causes of death including heart disease and stroke can be greatly reduced by proper nutrition and exercise. But it begins with each individual taking control over their personal life-style choices. So, there’s an economical way to improve your health: That is increasing your daily physical activity - WALK. “Walk” becomes the most popular and very HOT exercise recently, and it’s also kind of LOHAS. (Judy introduce to us in her last speech) You can do for yourself and your family.

There’s five reasons you should do it:
1. Don’t need to learn how to do it and what you need just walk outside.
2. Every 30 steps burns 1 K Calories.
3. Every step moves 95% muscles of your body.
4. The best way to discover environment around you.
5. You will find yourself becoming relax and delight accordingly.

How To Start: T-O-W-A-L-K
1. Time In the morning (4~6), or evening (6~10), choose a convenient time to exercise and stick with it. Comfortable temperature is around 20℃~30℃.

2. Over all, Think about Safety Exercise anywhere that is convenient, fun and interesting, keeping SAFETY in mind. Be familiar with your route. Avoid walking alone, in streets without good lighting, or in heavy traffic areas. Carry identification and let someone know where you are going.

3. Wear Comfortable Shoes On warm days, dress in lightweight clothing that breathes, such as cotton. Dress warmly on colder days and wear a hat to keep your head warm. Wear comfortable shoes with a thick, flexible sole and good arch support. Sore feet or blisters can ruin a nice walk.

4. Attention! Warm-Up The best way of warming-up is 3 to 5 minutes of light stretching along with 5 minutes of very low level exercise. This will reduce injuries and strains.

5. Laggard or Fast, the Right Speed is Important For beginner, 100 steps in 1 minute is suitable. Then you could increase in the speed of heart beats plus your age no greater than 170.

6. (K)Cool-Down Five minutes of stretching after your physical activity will help prevent cramping and allow your body temperature to decrease gradually.

And Something more …
It is an easing and natural exercise. I strongly suggest you do it regularly and walk 5 days a week. There’s another benefit: you will know who your neighbors are. Because people rarely go out usually don’t know name of their neighbors.
So, let’s take a walk.

C3 - Changing and Succeeding Under Any Conditions

Changing and Succeeding Under Any Conditions
By Mickey Chuang at Jun. 20, 2007

"CHANGE", it happens in our daily life no matter you like it or not.
"Everything is changing." we heard it very often, but we usually don't like changes.
What should we do about it when facing these changes and how to do better? It's quite a big question.

The Book
There's a book I want to introduce entitled "Our Iceberg Is Melting" (2005) composed by John Kotter and Holger Rathgeber. I read it recently and I found it could bring us some ideas to deal with changes.

It is written as fable, not a 300 pages' book and easy to read. It uses a story of the penguins to highlight the points. In this book, one of the penguins named Fred observes that the iceberg that his colony is living on is melting. He must use a vast array of tools to convince the others that the iceberg is melting and that new options need to be explored. Knowing that he will need the support of everyone in the community, he tries to tell one of the penguins and then pulls together the team in which each with different problem solving skills. They work together to make changes.

All of the characters in the book, Fred, Ann, Nono, Louis, Jordan, are all based on real life characters. Many of them you will quickly recognize from your workplace and day-to-day life. The book shows how the penguins did and stepped outside the box.

There're 8 principles of problem solving the author infuses in this story.
The eight step process of successful change:
Set the Stage
1. Create a sense of urgency. Help others see the need for change and the importance of acting immediately.
2. Pull Together the Guiding Team. Make sure there is a powerful group guiding the change—one with leadership skills, credibility, communication ability, authority, analytical skills, and a sense of urgency.

Decide What to Do
3. Develop the Change Vision and Strategy. Clarify how the future will be different from the past, and how you can make that future a reality.

Make it Happen
4. Communicate for Understanding and Buy In. Make sure as many others as possible understand and accept the vision and the strategy.
5. Empower Others to Act Remove as many barriers as possible so that those who want to make the vision a reality can do so.
6. Produce Short-term Wins. Create some visible, unambiguous successes as soon as possible.
7. Don't Let Up. Press harder and faster after the first successes. Be relentless with initiating change after change until the vision is a reality.

Make it Stick
8. Create a New Culture. Hold on to the new ways of behaving, and make sure they succeed, until they become strong enough to replace old traditions.

Enjoy The Book and also The Changing World.
The book is very short, and takes only a couple hours to read, you will feel energized after reading the book and ready to make some changes in your life and the way that you communicate with others.

I think it also can be applied to our club, the Toastmasters Club. For example, like we're new elected officers, we found some problems about making our club to run better and the 8 steps could be the good way to make a change. You may also found something, in our club and you can also join the team no matter you're the officers or not, because the club is like our iceberg.

Hope you enjoy the book and also the changing world.

C2 - Lessons on Life

Lessons on Life
By Mickey Chuang at Apr. 24, 2007

To KNOW or MEET someone is daily event in our life. Have you ever felt that you are wrong about something, especially point of view on people? There's a story could bring us something to think it over.

There was a man who had four sons.
He wanted his sons to learn not to judge things too quickly.
So he sent them each on a quest, in turn,
to go and look at a pear tree that was a great distance away.

The first son went in the winter, the second in the spring, the third in summer, and the youngest son in the fall.

When they had all gone and come back,
he called them together to describe what they had seen.
The first son said that the tree was ugly, bent, and twisted.

The second son said no it was covered with green buds and full of promise.

The third son disagreed; he said it was laden with blossoms
that smelled so sweet and looked so beautiful,
it was the most graceful thing he had ever seen.

The last son disagreed with all of them;
he said it was ripe and drooping with fruit,
full of life and fulfillment.

The man then explained to his sons that they were all right,
because they had each seen but only one season in the tree's life.

He told them that you cannot judge a tree, or a person, by only one season,
and that the essence of who they are
and the pleasure, joy, and love that come from
that life can only be measured at the end,
when all the seasons are up.

If you give up when it's winter,
you will miss the promise of your spring,
the beauty of your summer,
fulfillment of your fall.

Don't let the pain of one season destroy the joy of all the rest.
Don't judge life by one difficult season.
Persevere through the difficult patches and better times are sure to come some time or later.

End story.

Ladies and Gentlemen, from this story I think all of you have already found something. I think you could do better judging on things about the society, the country, the peoples all around you. If you take some time to look at it with different aspect of view and think it over from time to time before you make the move. We could find the TRUTH and ANSWER you're looking for.

Thanks for listening.

A8 Speech - Jul. 17,2007

A8 Speech - by David Tsui at Jul. 17,2007

Opening,
Today I would like to say something about our president Camila Wu. Do you thinks she is a good president? Do you think she is capable to lead our club to the goal of DCP target?
Ladies and Gentlemen. One month ago when we host the discharge and installation ceremony, I forget to ask you a question “ Any Protest”. That means if you want to protest the president, we had to vote for the result. It was my mistake. But our new president was really good for this position. At least on three things.

Body,
First, she is a vegetarian. I don’t know she like meat or not. Definitely, she does not like bone.
Secondly, she is an excellent teacher who was master in mass but now teach English as her daily work. Please don not count on her to teach you how to use the fancy cell phone.

Finally, she chooses the easy way to be a president rather than to compete with 陳水扁or 馬英九. And she is our club first female president. Do you really think it is easy to do so? Of cause not, she must always think about Toastmaster. She must keep her cell phone stand by 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Above all she must love Toastmaster more than her husband. I have to say so when Paul is not here. Otherwise he will kill me.

Conclusion,
All in all I would like to say, our president Camila, she was ready to take this challenge of being our president. Not only physically she is a vegetarian but also mentally she love toastmaster more than her husband. So let me ask you are you with her? Will you support her?

(Toastmaster)

C3 - Illusion - Jul.17,2007

C3 - Illustration illusion
Jillian Fang at Jul. 17,2007 (Best speaker of the meeting)

What’s Illusion? What does it mean? Does anyone have any experience that you believe what you saw, but the result has another meaning? We can say “Illusion” may occur to you.
Illusion’s meaning is a distortion of a sensory perception.
Perception means understanding, comprehension.
It belongs to psychology, philosophy, and also medical science. It sounds a complex problem. I just concentrate my subject on visual illusions, illusion of illustrations.
I try to use some illustrations that will be well known and understood for you.
Do you remember I have shown you the illustrations last meeting?
Illustration is a form of visual art. Some illustrations we can realize, but some ones we don’t. For example, these are illustrations. The picture one is watercolor work. …we can understand it. Red chilly, plants.

The second one is a girl with some antique statuary. It was made by color pencils, watercolor. The third one……… can you understand the picture what it communicate?

Have you ever thought about these amazing illustrations?
And do these illustrations make you feel like illusion?
Now, we are going to test and verify amazing illustrations illusion.
Let me show you two pictures. The first one…..
What do you see?

How many things can you realize? The first picture ………
Can you describe the detail from the picture? An old man…An old baldness man with his hand on his chest….. archway or arched door, wall ….. Yes, all of you are right, but look at the picture carefully. You will find an old man in white color clothes. On his left side is a woman in a beautiful dress, and a dog is lying on the road.

The second picture………can you describe the detail from the picture again?
What do you see? A woman? What kind of the woman can you understand?
Both of them are women, but they are seen the different age by your eyes or thinking from everyone. She is not only a young lady but also an old woman.
If you saw an old woman, this is her nose as well as a lady’s jaw.

This is an old woman’s thin lips someone saw it as a young lady’s necklace. This is an old woman’s neckerchief as a lady’s overcoat. This is an old woman’s eye as a lady’s ear. This is the fringe of the old woman’s face as well as a lady’s head and neck to take a 45 degree turn. We do not talk about why does anyone make an opposite thinking? Because I have told you, that belongs to psychology and philosophy. I just let you know people face the same thing but sometimes they have expressed different thoughts. I hope you can enjoy my subject and enjoy amazing Illustration illusion. Thank you!

C3-The New Concept and Approach of Oral Hygiene(Chin-chi)

C3 - The New Concept and Approach of Oral Hygiene - by Chin-Chi at Jul. 17,2007

Oral hygiene refers to the education about taking care of the mouth. 95% of oral diseases come from inaccurate tooth-brushing behavior and habit. You may think that brushing the teeth well is just a piece of a cake. Just brush them from left to right, top to down, and front to back and do this way few times a day, and we can have beautiful teeth. If this is what you have in mind, you’d better watch out. I hope that after tonight’s speech, you will learn about and appreciate the new concept and new approach of oral hygiene, particularly how to brush the teeth better.
Furthermore, I hope that you would like to start practicing the new approach, right from tonight.

Your teeth may look white, clean, and beautiful in the mirror. But, when you apply disclosing tablet to your teeth, the small red pill will melt in your mouth and reveal the parts you overlook when brushing your teeth. The red areas show the bacteria plagues. The long-time accumulated bacteria plagues will decay the teeth and result in cavities, that are the holes in your teeth. Here is the question: we have been brushing our teeth hard with the way we are taught, why do we still get cavities? Keep in mind that we cannot “see” how well we have brushed our teeth. Keeping our teeth clean requires skills. Brushing the teeth is not only an art but also a habit.

Raising a good tooth-brushing habit is very important. Firstly, instead of using the traditional horizontal way, hold your toothbrush with an angle of 45 degree and place it on the marginal gingiva. This way ensures that we cover most part of our teeth, including the gingiva. Secondly, hold it softly and gently to massage your teeth, like treating an artwork. Do not just brush them hard up-down and from left to right. Brushing too hard will just damage our teeth. So, gently and continuously massage each tooth from left to right, front and back, at least 10-15 seconds a row. Thirdly, don’t forget to use dental floss for interdental spaces. Last but not least, the choice of a toothbrush is important. Since we are going to brush the gingiva, choose an extra-soft or super-soft one and hold it softly and gently so that it won’t hurt our teeth.

Why should we adopt the new approach? It is for our own good. It keeps us healthy and gives us a bright smile. It is also good for others. People will enjoy talking with us when seeing our beautiful smile. It is a way to show our respect to ourselves and others. Therefore, start using the new way to brush your teeth. And, wish you a bright smile, a bright future.
